The South Korean weather agency said the small earthquake in the city of Goesan was still the strongest of the 61 earthquakes that occurred in the country this year, and would be strong enough to knock objects over or break windows.

Emergency services officials received more than 140 calls from residents saying they felt the ground was shaking. The calls came mainly from the central North Chungcheong province, but also from the Gyeonggi province surrounding the capital, Seoul, and the southern North and South Gyeongsang provinces, according to a weather agency and government officials.

Central government and North Chungcheong Province officials said they were unaware of the damage. Kim Dong-wook, a resident of the central city of Chungju, told the YTN news channel that he heard a rumble in the ground and that the windows “rattled like a typhoon”. He said he had seen plates and bowls strewn across the restaurant floor in the building where he lived, but he did not know anyone was injured. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office said it instructed officials to also review the safety of electrical and telecommunications systems, although there were no immediate reports of problems.

The South Korean Nuclear Safety and Safety Commission concluded that the earthquake did not pose a threat to the safety of nuclear reactors in the south-eastern regions of the country. It also found that the earthquake did not hit the research reactor in the central city of Daejeon, which is approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) from where the quake occurred.
